We sat down with James Gibbs, our Catering Operations Director, to learn what makes their Afternoon Tea so special.
Q. What do customers love most about Afternoon Tea at Sands by the Sea?
James: “I think it’s the whole experience. Guests love that they can sit back, relax, and enjoy the views across the Thames Estuary while they chat and savour their treats. It’s not just about the food, it’s about creating a little escape for people. And the three-hour sitting lets them take their time, whether they’re catching up with friends, celebrating a special occasion, or just enjoying a peaceful afternoon.”
Q: Tell us a bit about the menu, what can guests expect?
James: “Our Afternoon Tea is designed to offer a mix of classic flavours with a touch of indulgence. Guests can expect a beautiful selection of freshly made sandwiches, each with its own unique filling. As well as a delicious sausage roll, wrapped perfectly in buttery, golden puff pastry. And of course, the scones are a highlight. We also include a selection of cakes that are almost too pretty to eat! To complete the experience, you can choose from a variety of teas or freshly brewed coffee.
Q: Can you share any favourite treats or highlights from the menu?
James: “Absolutely! Our guests love the variety we offer. The traditional English Scone, served with butter, a pot of Rodda’s clotted cream and jar of Essex’s own, world-famous Tiptree jam is always a hit. Also, the sandwiches have become a bit of a fan favourite too. And for those with a sweet tooth, the cakes are the stars of the show, each one indulgent and delicious.
We also have a Sparkling Afternoon Tea option too, where you can add a glass of Prosecco for just £9.75, which really makes the experience feel extra special.”
Q. That sounds great! Do you offer options for guests with specific dietary needs?
James: “Yes, absolutely! We want everyone to be able to enjoy Afternoon Tea with us, so we offer specially crafted Gluten-Free and Vegan Afternoon Tea options. We use high-quality ingredients to ensure these options are just as flavourful and indulgent as our traditional afternoon tea. We just ask that they’re pre-booked so we can prepare everything to perfection, but our goal is to make sure everyone can enjoy this experience, no matter their dietary preferences.”
