Southend’s Unsung Heroes Honoured at the 2025 Citizens of Southend Awards

A Night to Remember

On Tuesday 14th October, Southend residents gathered for a spectacular evening as the 2025 Citizens of Southend Awards celebrated the outstanding contributions of individuals making a real difference across the borough. The ceremony was filled with warmth, gratitude, and inspiration, recognising local heroes whose dedication strengthens the community.

A Proud History of Recognising Local Heroes

Back in 2007, Councillor Ian Robertson approached Philip Miller MBE with a proposal to create an awards scheme celebrating our town’s unsung heroes. Philip, together with Sir Teddy Taylor and other key community leaders, formed a committee to bring the vision to life — establishing The Citizens of Southend Awards. Since then, the awards have continued to shine a light on individuals whose courage, kindness, and commitment inspire others throughout the Southend community.

The Judging Panel

The awards were adjudicated by an exceptional panel of local volunteers and community leaders, each of whom contributes tirelessly to Southend through their own charitable work, community projects, and support for local initiatives. Their dedication ensures that the awards recognise those who truly embody the spirit of service and compassion. This year’s panel included:

Philip Miller MBE – Chief Executive of Stockvale Group and co-founder of the awards

James Miller – Operations Director of Stockvale Group and custodian the awards

Mick Thwaites – Former Divisional Commander of Southend Police

Sarah McDowall – Methodist Minister and Chaplain

Elise Fleetwood – A charitable sector professional with extensive experience in donor relations, volunteer mobilisation, and supporting community initiatives through her work with the NHS.

Melissa Aylott – Senior Manager at Sealife Adventure and volunteer coordinator

Anna Firth – Former MP for Southend West & Leigh and current television broadcaster and commentator

Evelyn Hadjicostas, a retired foster carer, opened her home to nearly 100 children over two decades and continues to volunteer across the community. Her dedication to fostering, social support networks, and initiatives for isolated residents demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to kindness and service.
